EducATe Community of Practice Meeting
Topic: Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology in Postsecondary Education (and beyond)
Description: This meeting, facilitated by QIAT-PS project director Dan Cochrane from University of Illinois Chicago, will be an interactive session organized as a practical inquiry around the dilemma of facilitating clear pathways for students with disabilities transitioning from K12 to postsecondary settings with AT. We’ll explore this dilemma from several perspectives, explore existing resources (including https://qiat-ps.org/), and work toward integration of ideas to address the problem. Since this will be a participatory session, here are some things to think about ahead of time:
- What stories can you share to provide perspectives on the dilemma?
- What is the relationship between your AT Act program and the various pathways to postsecondary AT support? (e.g. your state’s VR system, higher education system, employment support agencies, or centers for independent living?
- How have you used the QIAT-PS indicators in your work?
Presenter Background: Dan Cochrane, MA, MS, ATP, is a senior clinical instructor and PhD candidate in the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). A RESNA-certified AT Professional, Dan spent almost 25 years working in PK-12 special education as an educator and districtwide AT coordinator. He continues to provide AT services to VR customers as a clinician with the UIC Assistive Technology Unit and has been involved with an inclusive postsecondary education program (IPSE) for students with intellectual disabilities at UIC and City College of Chicago. Dan teaches in the UIC AT Certificate program, and, under Great Lakes ADA funding for the QIAT-PS project, is completing a curriculum to teach high school and transition students to self-determine their accommodations, including AT.
Participants: This meeting is open to all AT Act Program staff and subcontractors interested in education.
